What We Covered Today

Today's session focused on factorising quadratic expressions. We started by reviewing how to expand brackets, then moved into factorising monic quadratics where the leading coefficient is 1. We worked through several examples from Chapter 5 of the Cambridge Essential Maths 10 textbook, progressing from simple positive constant terms to expressions with negative constants.

How Julian Went

Julian engaged well throughout the session and showed strong conceptual understanding. He was able to factorise standard monic quadratics independently by the end. He still needs practice with negative constant terms - specifically identifying factor pairs where one factor is negative.

Topic Confidence

Expanding brackets
Factorising monic (positive)
Factorising with negatives
Solving by factorising

Areas to Focus On

Review factor pairs for numbers up to 50 with one negative factor

Practice factorising expressions with negative constant terms

Attempt Exercise 5D Q1-10 in the Cambridge textbook

Practice Questions

Factorise: x² + 9x + 20

Foundation

Factorise: x² + 2x - 15

Standard

Solve: x² + 3x - 18 = 0

What goes into every report

Six things, every single time.

Tutors don't write reports from scratch - they fill in a structured template the platform turns into the layout above. Means consistency across tutors, and no "the report this week was a bit short" surprises.

What was covered

A clear summary of the topics worked through in the session - which textbook chapter, which exam-style questions, which study-design dot points.

How your child went

An honest assessment from the tutor: where they're confident, where they hesitated, what concepts they need a second pass on.

Topic confidence ratings

Each topic gets a 1-5 confidence score that's tracked over time, so you can see which areas are improving and which still need work.

Areas to focus on

Specific, actionable next steps - which textbook exercises to attempt, which past papers to try, what to revisit before the next session.

Practice questions

Worksheets generated on the exact topics covered, with worked solutions. Your child can attempt them between sessions and bring anything they got stuck on to the next lesson.

Automatic, every session

Reports arrive in your inbox the same evening as the session. No chasing the tutor for an update, no "how did it go this week?" guesswork.
