The range, at a glance
Online tutoring in Victoria generally falls into three price bands:
- National online agencies: roughly $90 to $150 per hour. You pay a premium for a fully managed service where the company assigns and manages the tutor.
- Platforms and marketplaces: typically more affordable, because you choose your own tutor and pay them more directly. Tuterly sessions, for example, start from $75 per hour, all-inclusive.
- Independent tutors: often $30 to $60 per hour, especially high-achieving uni students. The lowest cost, but with no vetting, reviews or tooling included.
What actually drives the price
How the tutor is paid. In an agency model, a large share of your hourly rate goes to the company, not the tutor. On a platform or with an independent, more of what you pay reaches the person actually teaching, which is why you often get a comparable or stronger tutor for less.
What is bundled in. Some rates are just the session. Others include session reports, practice materials, and progress tracking. "All-inclusive" matters, an $80 rate with reports and worksheets built in can be better value than a $70 rate where everything else is extra.
Tutor experience and results. A 99-ATAR VCE Specialist tutor commands more than a generalist, and reasonably so. Match the level of tutor to the job, primary maths does not need the same specialist as Year 12 Methods.
Why online is often better value
Online removes travel for the tutor, which widens the pool and keeps rates competitive, and it removes travel for you, which is a real saving in time and fuel, especially outside metro Melbourne. You are also not limited to local supply, so you are not forced to pay a premium for the one specialist in town.
Working out what you should pay
Start from the job, not the rate. For confidence-building and homework support at primary or junior-secondary level, the middle band is usually plenty. For VCE, selective-entry or scholarship prep, paying for a proven subject specialist is worth it, the stakes and the measurable payoff are higher.
