NAPLAN maths practice: what actually helps in Years 3 and 5

First, some perspective

NAPLAN is a snapshot, not a verdict. It is one test on one morning, and it does not determine your child's future. Treating it as high stakes tends to produce anxious students who underperform, which is the opposite of what anyone wants.

That said, it is a useful checkpoint, and a bit of the right preparation genuinely helps. The trick is knowing what to practise.

Why confident students still stumble

The most common surprise for parents is a child who is doing fine in class maths and comes back with a middling numeracy result. Usually it is not a maths problem. It is a format problem.

School worksheets are sorted by topic. NAPLAN is not. A page headed Fractions tells your child the answer involves fractions. NAPLAN numeracy mixes topics with no warning, so the first step is working out what kind of problem you are looking at. That step is rarely practised.

It leans heavily on worded problems. Many questions are a short scenario rather than a bare calculation. A student who can compute perfectly can still lose marks translating the words into the sum.

It is timed. Working slowly and carefully is a good habit right up until the clock runs out.

What to actually practise

Given all that, the highest-value preparation is not more of the same topic drills:

1. Mixed-topic questions. Practice where your child does not know in advance which method applies. This is the single biggest gap between class work and the test.
2. Worded problems. Get them used to reading a scenario and deciding what is being asked before they touch a number.
3. Working under a gentle clock. Not stressful timing, just enough that they learn what a reasonable pace feels like.
4. Reading the question twice. A surprising share of lost marks come from answering the question they expected rather than the one on the page.

How much is enough

For a Year 3 or Year 5 student, one short practice session a week in the term beforehand is plenty. Twenty minutes of mixed questions, marked together, will do more than an hour of drilling a topic they already know.

Signs you have overdone it are easy to spot: dread before sessions, arguing about starting, or going through the motions without checking answers. If you see those, cut back. An anxious student on test day loses more marks than an under-prepared one.

Keep the conversation right

What you say about NAPLAN matters more than the practice. Framing it as a check on what they have learned so far, rather than a judgement of how smart they are, makes a real difference to how they sit it. If your child gets anxious about tests, the practice itself helps, because familiarity with the format removes a lot of the fear.
