How to help your child with VCE Chemistry: what Year 12 students actually need to do

VCE Chemistry is one of the most tutored subjects in Victoria for a reason. Unit 3 and 4 is a significant step up from Year 11, the content is dense, and the gap between understanding something in class and performing under exam conditions is wider here than in most other subjects. What Unit 3 and 4 actually covers

Unit 3 moves through two areas of study: chemical equilibrium applied to acids and bases, and how electrochemistry works. Unit 4 covers organic chemistry and then chemical synthesis and design. Across both units, students are expected to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, write extended responses that explain chemical concepts precisely, and handle data interpretation questions that reward methodical thinking over memorisation.

SACs: the part that catches students off guard

School-assessed coursework counts for 30% of the final study score, which makes SACs a material part of the result. Most Chemistry SACs involve a combination of written responses, data analysis, and sometimes a practical component or research task. The exact format varies by school.

What catches students out is treating SACs like tests you can cram for the night before. The written response questions often require students to explain a concept, link a chemical principle to a given scenario, or evaluate data. That takes practice with the actual phrasing VCAA expects, not just knowing the content. Students who read model answers and practise writing their own before SAC week consistently do better than those who rely on class notes alone.

The most common pitfalls in Year 12 Chemistry

A few patterns come up again and again for students who struggle to convert their knowledge into marks.

Weak equation writing. Balancing equations is foundational, but many students reach Year 12 still unsure of half-equation notation for electrochemistry or how to write equilibrium expressions correctly. These are guaranteed marks on the exam, and they are worth fixing early.

Shallow understanding of equilibrium. Le Chatelier's principle sounds simple until the exam asks students to explain a shift in terms of reaction rates, not just predict the direction. Surface-level understanding falls apart under that kind of question.

Ignoring organic chemistry until it is too late. Unit 4 organic content is broad, and students who deprioritise it while revising equilibrium and electrochemistry arrive at October with a serious gap.

Not practising under timed conditions. The end-of-year exam is three hours. Students who have never sat a full practice paper in one go often run out of time or lose focus in the final section.

What high performers do differently

For students aiming at study scores in the 40s, the approach shifts. It is not just about covering the content thoroughly, it is about building fluency with the kind of multi-step reasoning the harder questions demand.

Strong Chemistry students read primary sources and VCAA examiner reports, not just their class notes. The examiner reports are free on the VCAA website and they tell you exactly where students lost marks the year before. That is genuinely useful intelligence for anyone targeting a high score.

They also practise explaining concepts out loud or in writing, because the ability to articulate why something happens at a molecular level is different from being able to tick the right answer on a multiple choice question.

How to structure the year

Term 1 is for building solid foundations in Unit 3 content and nailing the first SACs. Term 2 is for finishing Unit 4 content and keeping Unit 3 revision ticking along. Term 3, once school returns and the GAT is out of the way, is when serious exam preparation begins. That means past papers, timed practice, and identifying which question types are still costing marks.

Starting past paper practice in Term 3 rather than the holidays before the exam gives students time to actually fix what they find, rather than just spotting problems and panicking.
