VCE Methods study plan: what actually gets you a 40+

Most Methods study plans look the same: a list of topics with checkboxes. "Week 1: differentiation. Week 2: probability." The problem? That's not how the exam tests you. A question on the Methods exam rarely tests one clean topic. It tests whether you can connect multiple sub-skills under pressure, and a topic-based plan doesn't tell you which sub-skills are actually weak.

If you're aiming for a 40+ study score, you need a skill-based plan. Here's how to build one.

Get the priority order right

Not all Methods topics carry equal weight. Structure your year around these three blocks, in order:

Functions and algebra first. This is the foundation for everything else in the course. If your function transformations, domain/range work, or algebraic manipulation is shaky, calculus and probability questions will fall apart regardless of how well you understand those topics in isolation.

Calculus second. This carries the largest marks allocation on the exam. Focus on sub-skills: setting up the derivative or integral is separate from interpreting the result, and both are separate from CAS fluency. Identify which step you're actually getting wrong.

Probability third. This is where students most commonly drop marks they shouldn't. The concepts aren't inherently harder, but students under-practise conditional probability and binomial distribution because they feel "easier" during the year. They're not easier under exam conditions.

The weekly schedule that works

Five hours of Methods study outside class per week is the minimum for a 40+. Split it into three blocks:

New content review (1.5 hours). Go back over what was taught that week. Rewrite key steps in your own words. Don't just re-read your notes.

Past paper or textbook practice (2.5 hours). Timed, exam-style questions. This is where the marks come from.

Error correction (1 hour). This is the step almost everyone skips. Go back through every question you got wrong, categorise the mistake (conceptual, algebraic, CAS, or reading error), and redo the question from scratch. Keep a running log.

When to use which papers

Before August, use your textbook exercises and commercial trial exams (Heffernan, NEAP, MAV) for topic-specific drilling. These are designed to isolate content areas, which is what you need during the learning phase.

Save VCAA past papers for August onwards. These test integrated skills across the course. Doing them too early means you're practising failure on the best resource you have.

Three failure modes to avoid

Starting past papers in Term 1. You haven't covered enough content to get value from full papers. You'll just feel behind.

Ignoring CAS skills. Exam 2 is a CAS exam. Students who can't efficiently use their calculator for simultaneous equations, graph analysis, and numerical integration lose time they can't afford.

Not reviewing errors. Doing 50 practice questions and only checking answers is wasted time. The learning happens when you diagnose why you got something wrong.
