How to help your child with VCE Physics: what Year 12 students actually need to do in their final year

VCE Physics is one of the most demanding subjects on the Year 12 timetable. The content is genuinely hard, the exam is unforgiving on method, and the gap between Unit 3 and 4 material and what students saw in Year 11 catches a lot of students off guard. If your child is sitting it this year, here is what actually matters.
What Year 12 Physics actually covers
Units 3 and 4 are the ones that count toward the ATAR. The VCAA study design divides them into four areas of study: How do things move without contact? (fields and forces), How are fields used to move electrical energy? (electric circuits and energy), How fast can things go? (motion and special relativity), and How are light and matter similar? (wave-particle duality and quantum physics).
That last area surprises many students. Quantum concepts and the photoelectric effect are not intuitive, and students who feel confident with Newtonian mechanics can hit a wall when the content turns abstract.
SACs: the part parents often underestimate
School-assessed coursework contributes 24% of the final study score. That is not a small number. VCE Physics SACs typically include practical investigations and written tasks, and schools schedule them throughout the year, often at the worst possible times.
The practical investigation is worth particular attention. Students are assessed on their ability to design an experiment, collect and analyse data, and evaluate their method. Knowing the physics is not enough. Your child needs to write up results in the specific format VCAA expects, including identifying sources of uncertainty and suggesting genuine improvements, not vague ones.
If your child loses marks on an early SAC, the written exam cannot fully make up the difference. Getting SAC preparation right from the start of Term 1 matters more than most students realise.
The written exam: what the format demands
The end-of-year exam is two hours and thirty minutes. It includes multiple choice, short answer, and extended response questions. VCAA publishes past papers and examiner reports, and those reports are worth reading carefully. Examiners flag the same issues year after year: students who know the concept but cannot express it in the precise language the marking scheme requires, and students who get the method right but do not show enough working to collect partial marks.
Showing working is not optional in VCE Physics. A student who writes the correct final answer with no working shown can score zero on a multi-mark question. Practising that discipline early, rather than assuming it will come naturally in the exam room, is one of the highest-return habits your child can build.
Where students typically struggle in Units 3 and 4
Fields and forces is the most common early stumbling block. Gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields require students to think in three dimensions and to switch between vector diagrams, equations, and conceptual explanations, sometimes within a single question.
Special relativity is the other area where confident students can suddenly feel lost. The concepts are genuinely counterintuitive, and the mathematical treatment in VCE is more demanding than many expect. A student who is not sleeping well and studying late in Term 3 often finds this topic the hardest to retain.
For students who are ahead of the pack, the extension opportunity is in the quality of written responses. High-scoring students do not just get the right number. They explain the physics clearly, use correct terminology consistently, and anticipate what the examiner is looking for. That is a skill that can be deliberately practised.
How to actually support your child right now
Keep the lines of communication open without adding pressure. Ask what is coming up rather than how they are going. If they are behind on a topic, the worst outcome is that they hide it until two weeks before the exam.
Encourage them to use the VCAA resources directly. Past exams, marking guides, and the current study design are all free and the most reliable source of what will actually be tested. Many students do not look at the study design until it is too late.
