How to prepare your child for the Year 7 maths transition: what Victorian parents need to know before the first term

The jump from primary to secondary school is one of the biggest academic shifts your child will make. And while the social side tends to get all the attention, the maths is quietly where a lot of kids start to struggle, often without saying anything until the first school report lands.
This is not about intelligence. It is about pace, format, and a handful of new concepts that arrive fast and build on each other quickly. Getting ahead of it before first term makes an enormous difference.
What actually changes in Year 7 maths
Primary school maths is largely concrete. Your child learns operations, fractions, and measurement using problems that connect to real things. The teacher has them for most of the day and can catch confusion early.
Secondary maths shifts to abstract thinking almost immediately. Under the Victorian Curriculum F-10 Version 2.0, Year 7 students move into negative integers, algebraic expressions, ratios, and proportional reasoning within the first half of the year. These topics are not harder versions of primary work. They are genuinely new ways of thinking about numbers.
The pace is also different. In primary school, a concept might be revisited across several weeks. In secondary, a topic gets a few lessons and then the class moves on, whether or not every student is ready.
The specific topics that catch students off guard
Integers and directed numbers. Working with negative numbers is usually brand new at this level. Students who have only ever added and subtracted positive values find operations like subtracting a negative genuinely confusing at first, and it comes up constantly across the rest of the year.
Fractions and ratios. Your child has seen fractions before, but Year 7 moves to more demanding applications: comparing ratios, solving problems involving equivalent ratios, and connecting fractions to percentages and decimals fluently. Speed and accuracy both matter here.
Introductory algebra. This is the one parents hear about most. The shift from arithmetic (finding an answer) to algebra (describing a relationship using a pronumeral) is conceptually significant. Students who go into Year 7 without a strong grasp of order of operations and number properties often hit a wall here in Term 2.
How Victorian secondary schools structure maths differently
Most Melbourne secondary schools stream or set students by ability in maths, often from Year 7. Whether that happens in first term or later in the year, your child's starting performance shapes which group they land in, and moving up is harder than it sounds once groups are set.
Secondary maths is also taught by subject specialists rather than a generalist classroom teacher. That is a good thing in the long run, but it means your child needs to advocate for themselves when they are lost, ask questions in a bigger class, and manage homework across multiple subjects at once. None of that comes naturally to most 12-year-olds.
What you can do before first term starts
The single most useful thing is closing any gaps in Year 6 content now. If your child is shaky on multiplication and division of fractions, converting between fractions and decimals, or working with percentages, those weaknesses compound quickly in Year 7. They do not disappear over summer.
Spending time on order of operations is also worth doing before term starts. BODMAS (or BIMDAS in some Victorian classrooms) is assumed knowledge by Week 2. It is a simple thing to consolidate in a few short sessions.
For students who are strong in maths, the opportunity here is different. Year 7 is where extension work starts to matter for future subject selection, especially if specialist or accelerated maths is something your family is considering later. Getting introduced to algebraic thinking before the class does gives a confident student a real advantage in establishing good habits early.
