Find a side or an angle

θOppositeAdjacentHypotenuse

The opposite is about 6.88 cm

  1. Label the sides from the angle 35∘35^\circ: you know the hypotenuse and want the opposite.
  2. The opposite and the hypotenuse go together in SOH: sin⁡θ=oppositehypotenuse\sin\theta = \dfrac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}
  3. Substitute: sin⁡35∘=x12\sin 35^\circ = \dfrac{x}{12}
  4. Multiply both sides by 1212: x=12×sin⁡35∘x = 12 \times \sin 35^\circ
  5. Use a calculator (in degrees mode): sin⁡35∘≈0.5736\sin 35^\circ \approx 0.5736
  6. x≈6.88 cmx \approx 6.88 \text{ cm} (rounded to 2 decimal places)

Sides are labelled from the angle θ: the opposite is across from it, the adjacent is next to it, and the hypotenuse is the longest side, opposite the right angle.

How it works

It labels the sides from your angle and picks the ratio that uses the two sides involved:

SidesRatio
Opposite and hypotenusesin⁡θ=OH\sin\theta = \dfrac{\text{O}}{\text{H}} (SOH)
Adjacent and hypotenusecos⁡θ=AH\cos\theta = \dfrac{\text{A}}{\text{H}} (CAH)
Opposite and adjacenttan⁡θ=OA\tan\theta = \dfrac{\text{O}}{\text{A}} (TOA)

Sides are rounded to 2 decimal places and angles to 1, as most questions ask.

Trigonometry calculator: questions

How do I find a missing side?

Choose 'Find a side', enter the angle, the side you know and its length, and the side you want. The calculator picks sin, cos or tan for you and shows each step.

How do I find a missing angle?

Choose 'Find an angle' and enter two sides. It works out the ratio and uses the inverse (sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹ or tan⁻¹), giving the angle to 1 decimal place.

Does it use degrees or radians?

Degrees, which is what Australian school questions use up to Year 10.

Does it work for triangles without a right angle?

No. SOH CAH TOA is for right-angled triangles. For other triangles you need the sine rule or cosine rule (Year 10A).
