Questions parents ask about probability

What's conditional probability?

The probability of event A happening, given that event B has already happened. Written P(A|B). For 'probability of having the flu given a positive test', P(flu | positive test) depends on the test's accuracy.

What's the conditional probability formula?

P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B). Year 10 introduces this for two-way table and tree-diagram contexts. The formal definition extends in Year 11 Methods.

When are two events independent?

When the occurrence of one doesn't change the probability of the other. P(A|B) = P(A) - and equivalently P(A and B) = P(A) x P(B). Independence is a common Year 10 test question.

Why does conditional probability trip students up?

Because the language 'given that' isn't always explicit. Students have to spot when a question is implicitly conditional - 'given the test was positive, what's the probability...' - and apply the conditional formula rather than the simple probability.
