About this worksheet
Why we built it
Year 9 coordinate geometry is essentially three formulas - gradient, midpoint, distance - applied to a long list of varied problems. These worksheets drill all three and combine them in the multi-part questions VCAA loves to set.
What's covered
Sub-skills your student will practise
- ✓Gradient formula and interpretation
- ✓Midpoint of two points
- ✓Distance between two points (Pythagoras based)
- ✓Identifying parallel vs perpendicular lines
- ✓Multi-step problems combining all three

Frequently asked
Questions parents ask about coordinate geometry
What's the gradient formula?
Gradient = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1), where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are any two points on the line. Rise over run - how much y changes per unit of x.
What's the midpoint formula?
Midpoint of (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is ((x1 + x2) / 2, (y1 + y2) / 2). Average the x's, average the y's. The midpoint of (2, 4) and (6, 8) is (4, 6).
How do students find the distance between two points?
It's just Pythagoras: distance = sqrt((x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2). The horizontal gap is one shorter side, the vertical gap is the other, the straight-line distance is the hypotenuse.
Why does Year 9 coordinate geometry matter?
It's the bridge between algebra and geometry. Year 10 uses it heavily for parallel and perpendicular gradients and the equation-of-a-line problems VCE Methods is built on.
Want a real plan for the term?
Worksheets are great for repetition. A Tuterly tutor can spot the specific moves your student keeps getting wrong and fix them in one or two sessions.
